How to Spend Time with Dad
How do you celebrate Father's Day? Do you have an annual ritual, or do you do something different every year? Any new dads in your social circle?
We know many Figg Street Co. customers will be celebrating Father's Day this Sunday, June 15th. Perhaps you're among them. We also know that for some, it can be tricky figuring out what to do to celebrate, or even how to spend quality time with your dad. Consider his personality, preferences and hobbies. Then take a look at the ideas we've listed below. Several of these can even be used in combination.
A note about quality
You may be spending the whole day on Sunday with your dad, or even the whole weekend. Perhaps you're just popping in for an hour or so. Whatever the quantity of time, focus on the quality of that time. Be present with your dad. Give him your full attention and be in the moment. It will deepen your experience and give you something to remember, however simple.
BBQ/ Cooking
Yes, this one's a classic. Many Father's Days have revolved around the grill. For good reason - there are many dads that love barbeque. Is your dad one of them? Consider cooking together, if that's something he'd like, cooking for him (if he likes to steer clear), or leaving him to run the show if that's the kind of guy he is. Make him a favourite dessert, to boot.
The Great Outdoors
If your dad loves getting some fresh air, think about doing an activity or sport together. This can be anything from a walk through the neighbourhood after lunch or dinner to an afternoon hiking along the escarpment, sailing, cycling through wine country, golfing, running, playing pickle ball or flying a kite. Maybe it's a swim in the pool or croquet in the back garden. Or visit one of the beaches or parks in the region. If you want something a little more adventurous, try camping together.
Go Back in Time
Is the dad you're celebrating a history buff? Visit a local museum together or attend a historical tour. Our region has historic walking tours outside during this time of year. Or visit a particular landmark or place of interest, such as Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Old Fort Erie or the Laura Secord Homestead. If he's a stationery and letterpress lover, take him to the MacKenzie Printery & Newspaper Museum in Queenston.
Make it Personal
Maybe your dad prefers family history. Or he's the sentimental type. If you think it would bring him joy, do some research on your family background to share with him, or research together. You could also spend some time making a family photo album or collage. Doing so is a great way to jog his memory and hear an interesting story or two.
Mr. Fun Guy
Does your dad like lively events? Adventure? Something different? Try something new together, like a helicopter or hot air balloon ride. An escape room. Get tickets to see a stand-up comedian, live concert, or go try karaoke together. If he likes to get out but wants something a little more low-key, go bowling.
Home Sweet Home
Perhaps your dad is relishing some time at home. If gardening is something he enjoys, consider helping him out and gardening together. Or spend the afternoon or evening playing board games, or doing a puzzle. Plan a movie night and pick some old favourites of his, or new releases that he's eager to see.
Give Him a Rest...
Some dads have been through the wringer lately and all they really want is some rest. If this is your dad, give the man a few hours to nap or relax. You can steer clear of the favourite sofa or recliner if this is what he's been eyeing. Help him get cozy, then leave him in peace for a while.

We'd love to hear if any of these ideas were helpful. Perhaps they reminded you of something else you've been wanting to do. We hope that your Father's Day is a wonderful one, however you spend it!
