In my first year of university, I met a wonderful woman who arrived from Italy just a month and a half before the school year commenced. She wanted to learn how to speak English (she knew only a few words at the time). She convinced her boyfriend to join her in Canada; he found a job and they rented a home. Our friendship blossomed. She was a passionate learner and driven. She graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Commerce and won a gold medal prize in Accounting for the highest standing in her class. I couldn’t have been more proud of her accomplishments and work ethic. There's so much to learn from such individuals. Even though her English wasn’t perfect, and she called the kitchen, “the chicken,” she emanated confidence. She bet on herself and won.

What memories does graduation bring up for you? Or is graduation something you're looking forward to? It's that time of year when customers come into the shop looking for cards and gifts to express their love, excitement and admiration for the graduate in their life.

While there are many stationery items that make great graduation gifts, we think one of the best options is a writing instrument. There's a sense of tradition in gifting a graduate a quality pen. A wood-turned, metallic, or enamelled barrel signifies a step up to a higher level. A movement toward adulthood, maturity and achievement. The fact that it is refillable indicates that it's something worthy of care, to be treasured.

As graduates transition into a new phase of life, there's bound to be a lot on their minds. It's often a time of great reflection, many emotions, and hope. A time to consider one's dreams and goals. Writing is a wonderful tool at such a juncture. It's another great reason why a writing instrument works - it speaks to the power of the written word. With any luck, there will be plenty of items to sign, thank you cards to write, and notebooks to fill with a special pen.

Writing instruments are loved by many professionals, including those in business, architecture, and healthcare, as well as artists and writers. Some are true aficionados and have specific preferences such as a particular brand, nib size or colour. For a special occasion, it can be fun to select a pen with personal meaning. Something that delights the writer.

We hope this issue is helpful in choosing a special item for the special person in your life who's graduated, starting a new venture or evolving into the next stage of their career and life. If that person is you, we wish you well as you grow and your life continues to unfold.
