Melt Someone's Heart
Have you ever felt your heart melt by the words or actions of someone? When I first started dating my husband, he was preparing to set sail on a long voyage from New York to the Caribbean. I received a card or little note in the mail each day he was away. I remember feeling so touched by this. It was a lovely surprise!
Valentine's Day is this Friday. We all know this day is to celebrate love and romance. However, I'm sure many of you feel as I do - that the real joy is doing the unexpected for the one you love on any given day, spontaneously.
How do you express love to another? At the shop, we see many people doing so through words. Often, there's thoughtfulness and care put into each little decision: not just the words, but the way these words will be presented. Some choose to write a handwritten letter, others craft a poem. Some collect quotes and paste or print them into a small notebook. Others aren't sure what to say and prefer selecting a greeting card that captures their sentiment for them.
We also witness many moments of consideration. Things such as people picking out paper in the favourite colour of a loved one. Or ink. Or choosing motifs that hold special memories or secret meanings. There's a nuance to how one goes about preparing to declare their feelings to another.
I recently watched a short reel of a woman who wrote and prepared hundreds of notecards with envelopes. Once sealed, she went out on the streets, subways, planes and parks, etc. and left an envelope here, there and anywhere. It was not clear what she wrote, but she did write that the recipient could contact her if they wanted. And people did! They were overjoyed with the note and you know what happened next? Actions like this are contagious and a win-win for all of us.
Of course, there seem to be an infinite number of ways to express love. There's the popular saying that a way to a man's heart is through his stomach. I've known many who've demonstrated love by feeding others.
JC Patissier, across the street from us, sees many people creating special moments with delicious sweet treats to share with one another. And, of course, many adore a box of chocolates.

Words, quality time, gifts, acts of service, and physical touch are the love languages that a popular book made well-known. It's fun to explore all of these and see what resonates most for those we love and for ourself. It's also worth considering that what is good for our general well-being may be even more enjoyable when shared. For example, a walk outside in nature. Or an hour or so in the dark listening to a favourite album or playlist. Making a scrapbook or trying a new craft or art form.
Spending time with those we love is often a treat in itself. If either of you enjoy gardening, consider attending Seedy Saturday on February 15th. The Master Gardeners of Niagara are holding this event at the Meridian Community Centre in Fonthill from 9am to 3pm. There will be hundreds of varieties of seeds for sale and to swap (if you've collected any from your garden), guest speakers and children's activities.
We hope this issue has given you a few things to consider doing for your loved one. However you choose to spend this Valentine's Day, we wish you much love in your life and joy in expressing and receiving it!
